Week 17: Endless 8?

Last Friday, I said bad things will happen because everyone is focused on the Christmas party. It turns out to be quite true. I managed to put out buildserver in an endless loop. We discovered on Monday that my build has been building for 3 days… and still building. So the buildmaster and my superior had to clean up after me D:

Anyway… kinda smooth week with some manual labor – soldering and helping with wiring.

Again… Friday both my team leader and I brought cake :P

Week 16: Christmas Party

Last Friday, the company held a Christmas party for all employees located in Denmark. I might had expected too much of this great company, but it was okay as a starter. The food wasn’t impressive (just like the lunch in the canteen), there were no original live band (mostly cover bands)… BUT… but the scale of the party was hugemongulous! And free beer, then you know it’s a great party.

Saturday, I woke up with an enormous pain in my neck and shoulders, with no clue of how I’ve got it.

But workwwise I managed to break something again… It turns out that I had used a Invoke method on an UI, where I should had used BeginInvoke. So what’s the difference? – Well, Invoke is synchronous and BeginInvoke is asynchronous – meaning that the UI will crash because I didn’t use BeginInvoke instead.

I also desoldered some plateresistors from a PCB board. It was kinda tricky to solder them off, since both terminals should be heated at the same time, meaning dual soldering iron!
Then I helped reattach the board to it’s place and thereafter take some measurements (totally irrelevant to the board ofc).

Anyway…

Week 15: Useless like a paper

Well, my supervisor keep saying that I am more useless than a sheet of paper – in a motivating way :3 When I finally do something good, he will praise me like a dog, saying “Good boy…”. So when I win my battles against him (which is quite rare…I’m mostly trolling you know), I get to slap him verbally :3

This week he was quite down emotionally – I can’t tell ya the direct cause, but someone hurt his programming pride. I have an optimistic personality (yeah yeah… I have my moments) and I am so, because some people appreciate what I do. Take programming – I program something with someone might need. But when someone tells you that what you do is not going to make any happy and tries to sabotage your work, then you will get hurt emotionally.

The best cure against the gloomy mood, is cake. And we had lots of cake that day. For lunch there was this rice pudding (ris à l’amande – a danish christmas desert) which was quite heavy. Then we got more cake afterwards in the canteen. And when we got back from the canteen, another collegue had brought cake from his daugthers birthday party.

Work-wise I havn’t done much due to my supervisor disrupting my work with videos and other things. But else it’s going quite good. I’m fixing bugs and implementing new features – still using Test Driven Development. At Monday I learned PowerShell. I was going to use it for scripting an automatic version numbering for our project. It was quite fun, but I might just hug my unix bash. I also helped sorting out the new cable hell, where some 30 wires have been mixed like spaghetti.

I also heard MW3 epic failed on launch-day. But why do I care? Im just happy that BF3 is free of nabs. Well not entirely. Non-English players should not play on European servers! I am trying sooo hard to force some teamwork into any match I have. But it seem futile when players don’t drop a ammo crate when you spam “GIVE ME A AMMO BOX PLZ!”. That is why I try to play with my friends as much as possible – at least they got a brain :3

Anyway,

Week 14: Shotgun !

The major point of this week was, that I learned the anti-patter: Shotgun surgery. This is a pitfall for developers, when adding new features to a code base requires many same/alike changes in different parts of the code. This IS a bad thing, because it violates the ‘only-once’ principle.

Monday, I had a talk with my Team Leader about my internship, and how I felt about things. In general, it has been a plesant experice with less monkey-work done that I expected. Ofc, the time has past very quickly while working – maybe because it is fun ^__^

Most important, the first Christmas beers was sold on Friday. And it was quite amusing, since I meet some old friends.

Anyway…

Week 13: Insomnia

I’ll make this very short because I don’t have much time.

This week was kind of stressful without the stress. I finally got my will – no pair programming this week – because my supervisor is ill. I have got a good hang of programming in practice – so I know how extinguish the problems before they grow big and troublesome. Btw my earlier project with ‘reading from Excel and process it to XML’-tool had some bugs. Well they program works at specified, but the specification has changed…

Thursday and Friday was intense, because Battlefield 3 was released. This results in sleepless nights through Thursday and Friday. Yeah, Ima BF fanboy and totally hyped over BF3. The singleplayer campaign was completed in 4 hours (normal on PS3), which was okay – nothing new there. I really love the CQC scenes where you buttonmash to chop your opponent. I might make a montage on PC when I get time.

The reason why I can’t sleep, is the multiplayer part of BF3. Playing on PC with ultra settings and 7.1 surround sound is soo rewarding. You have probably already seen some snippets from BF3 and thought: “Oh this is awesome scenery!” But the sound / soundeffects are incredible. Deflecting bullets, M-douce, ground vechiles, jets… all of them make BF3 a superb game.

Anyway… I will go shred some people
